From where do the people of Istria and their customs originate

Thanks to a number of waves of settlement that have taken place in these areas throughout history, the culture, customs and languages have changed along with the occupying rulers. This kind of historical mishmash puts Istria first, so most of the people here feel y like Istrians from a cultural point of view. However, there is also something that has not changed much over the centuries, and especially not so often, which is its geographical location and climate.

In order to save the small part of fertile land they had, the inhabitants of Istria built settlements on barren lands, on the edges of fields and sinkholes, or by the sea. So, today towns and settlements can be found by the coastline or on top of the hills in the interior, and the houses are most often separated by narrow cobbled streets. Today, such streets are the subject of admiration of tourists, but also something that the people of Istria are very proud of.

If you take a look at Istrian fields, you will find scattered kažuni, small dry-stone buildings. These are most commonly found in the southern and western parts of Istria. It is almost impossible to expect people with such a history to be bad hosts. Diligent people on red soil

Due to the geographical location of their peninsula, the clean sea, the poor land and the stone,  Istrians were forced to live off fishing and agriculture. Apart from hard physical work, the people of Istria also knew how to sing. Two-part singing and playing in a so-called Istrian scale was also known. The Grožnjan area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and during the Roman rule, a number of buildings were built here, with the area becoming part of a popular commercial route. In the Middle Ages the city centre became richer for its many walls and castles built by the Romans and later by the Venetians in the late Middle Ages. The majority of these buildings still proudly defend the truth about the rich history of this small town today. It was first mentioned in history under the name Piemonte in 1102 when it was donated to the Church.

Along the narrow streets to reach the medieval centre

What we can say about Grožnjan today is that it is a small Istrian town, located 20 km away from Novigrad and 17 km from Motovun, on top of one of the hills in the peninsula’s interior with the valley of the River Mirna below. Regardless of the direction you choose to come to Grožnjan, you will have to take a narrow road to reach the town centre. There is a spacious car park, where you can park your car at the end of this road, close to the medieval centre. 

It’s worth taking a walk to the medieval centre that has kept its original appearance. Streets, squares, building facades, everything looks like it did in the Middle Ages. It’s an experience that is hard to feel in any other place.

From the edge of the town centre you can see the River Mirna valley, Motovun in the distance and olive groves and fields surrounding Grožnjan in-between.

Grožnjan is a town with distinctive inhabitants

Grožanj is a town of marvellous sounds and sights, and its inhabitants are also special because most of them have a vision, an artistic approach to life. Besides that, in Grožnjan most of them live in their own special world so it is no wonder that every house becomes a kind of stage during the summer, and Grožnjan itself – a platform for all musicians, sculptors and painters.

Almost every alley of this little town in the Istrian interior hosts galleries and ateliers during the summer where works of art are exposed and sold. If you prefer dance or theatre events more than painting, Grožanj has something for you too. 

Peace, but also the excitement that Grožnjan offers to romantic souls is the complete opposite to the crowded terraces by the sea, the large number of yachts and the smell of sunscreen. #1 Ancient battles and cisterns

In the waters around Savudrija, a huge sea battle between the Venetians and a fleet led by emperor Barbarossa’s son, Otho, took place in 1177. According to legend, after the defeat, Otho tried to run away and hide in a – cistern, whilst the name of the place comes from “Salvo re” which means “saved king”.

#2 Venice and the Istrian oak tree

The oak trees that grew in the area of the Mirna River valley were used for the construction of Venice. An interesting fact is that special attention was paid to routing oak seedlings, in order to better follow the lines of the constructed boats.

Lots of planning and high quality materials were needed in order to make Venice “float” until nowadays.

#3 Dinosaurs once walked through Istria

If the road leads you to the protected area of Kamenjak, on the Medulin Riviera, you will get a chance to go back to a period without air conditioning, cooling fans, heated pools or saunas, a period without people.

In other words, you might find dinosaur footprints there!

One of the wealthiest sites of dinosaur footprints in Europe is located on the islet of Fenoliga, close to Medulin with over 100 samples.

#4 Have you ever wondered how small the smallest town in the world is?

In the heart of Istria, is the little town of Hum. You will probably have heard about it, but did you know that it is only 10 metres long and 30 metres wide? For comparison, a football pitch is 45-90 metres wide and 90-120 metres long.

Believe it or not, Hum’s small dimensions hide a rich history. There is a legend passing through Istria that says that this place was created thanks to the giants who built towns in the river valley.

When we speak about small towns around the world, we usually refer to towns with up to 30,000 inhabitants, whilst this stunning little town has only around 20 permanent residents.

#5 A small municipality for great football players

In the small Municipality of Oprtalj, on the northwestern part of Istria, a picturesque town was mentioned for the first time in 1115, lying on a high hill (378 metres above sea level). In the Middle Ages it was the headquarters of various feudal lords.

Besides its mild Mediterranean climate, its truffles and chestnuts, the municipality is known as the most football crazy in Croatia. In particular, for its 900 inhabitants, it even has two football clubs with over 100 members. Maybe at this very moment a new Modrić is “growing up” on the football pitches in Oprtalj.

#6 Momjan hosts the wine “Silicon Valley”

The Santa Lucia 2008 wine, made from the Istrian Malvasia variety, was announced as the best wine in Croatia.

The vineyard where the grapes matured is located in only one place in Momjan. This hill is considered one of the best locations in Istria for wine production. As well as this, Momjan is the highest little hill of northwestern Istria being 270 metres above sea level.

#7 Grožnjan becomes the “Jazz World Centre” once a year

#Journey to Croatia

If you are arriving in Croatia from another continent, you should know that there are airports located across our small country so you will not have a problem reaching your destination. During the season months, from April to September, direct flights are available from European destinations to all of the larger Croatian cities.

Oprtalj: If you are fond of tradition

It is not easy to find the words to describe this pearl. Maybe because it has been ground since prehistory, through the period of the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages and the French rulers enabling it to become the pearl of Istria and Croatia that it is today. Given its rich history, it is a true miracle that it has remained hidden for so long.

Stepping along its narrow cobblestone streets along which legionnaires, researchers, noblemen and peasants once passed, and maybe even St. Geronimo himself, brings with it a special feeling. Namely, there is a legend that this man, who was responsible for translating the Bible into Latin, was born in Oprtalj.
